At the beginning of november 2004, RPS member Eddie Maes suggested that two disposable cameras put together could create a potent stereo camera. The idea was then innocently put forward of passing around such a device between members curious about it and to see what pictures would come out of it. This quickly created a lot of interest among the members and grew into the somewhat ambitious project that is the "3D RTW disposable camera project". So, you ask, what is it?
This is a great human experience as it lets photographers around the world do something together. Photography is about sharing, about seeing-living-feeling something and wanting to let other people feel-relate-understand. This project aims at sharing an experiment between photographers that results in a collective work to share with the general public.
This is a great technical experience too as building the device used to take the stereograms is also part of the project. Obviously, this is not rocket science, yet keeping the device simple while making it easy to use is a challenge. Especially that it needs to withstand a journey around the world and the sort of abuse creativity gone wild can create... Details for the 3D RTW camera construction can be found on Eddie's page.
And it is a great artistic experience including a Cadavre Exquis. Each photographers will create three stereograms, one representative of the place where he lives, a second freely following his inspiration and a third one linked to the previous photographer's third stereogram through an idea association. Each will also create a "portrait of the 3D RTW disposable camera" using his usual equipment and methods. The resulting collective work can be explored in different ways, from what it tells about the places, the photographers individually and in general but also about the public itself as rare are those who never used a disposable camera.
